Maw's One Stop Shop in Brent Celebrates Grand Opening

By Daniel Hollander, AERN Intern

Maw's One Stop Shop held its grand opening on Thursday, October 21, 2010. Maw's is a new business made possible when Brent passed an ordinance allowing alcohol sales last May. AERN and the Bibb County Chamber of Commerce worked with owner Kandi Murphy and manager Keith Crocker on drafting their business plan.

An open house was held on October 22nd in Brent, Alabama for Maw's One-Stop-Shop. Those in attendance for the ribbon cutting were (from left to right): Randy Crocker, Rosalyn Adams, Debra Ragland, Tracey Mitchell (Chamber Director), Kandy Crocker (Owner), Faye Gamble (Chamber President), Kerrie Murphy, Margaret Murphy, Keith Crocker (Owner), and Mayor Dennis Stripling.

"They wanted to absorb as much information as they could. We worked with them for about two months and provided materials. They were very business minded," said Tracey Mitchell, Bibb County chamber director. The Maw's crew worked with AERN and the Chamber, using the onsite computer and library of AERN books and materials.

"We were dead-on with our business plan," said Crocker, claiming that they met their first week targets exactly, and have steadily improved every week after. "We're the only store in the county that sells liquor, and we're the only store in the area open after 9:00 p.m.," Crocker said.

The only other town that permits alcohol sales in Bibb County is Centerville, whose businesses have yet to stock liquor. Aside from Chilton County, Bibb is surrounded by wet counties.

"A lot of folks are still so used to buying their alcohol outside the county, but they'll come around once they feel more comfortable about buying it locally," Crocker said. "We want to keep things local and support local business, because that's where our business comes from, too." Maw's grand opening included a ribbon cutting ceremony, and the Chamber was on hand to provide support. "We want to remind people that we have the AERN program here at the Chamber and that those materials and resources are available and an asset to the community," Mitchell said.

Maw's One Stop Shop is located in Brent next to the Piggly Wiggly. The Bibb County Chamber of Commerce is located in Centerville.
